MPowering Kids Students Learn About Fire Safety

June 10, 2005

A group of 23 MPowering Kids students learned first-hand about fire safety during a visit to the Plandome Fire Department.

A total of 23 MPowering Kids students attended the trip, and were chaperoned by nine volunteers and MPowering Kids staff. Roger Goodwin, an MPowering Kids supporter and a Captain of Plandome’s Volunteer Fire Department, taught the students about fire safety and distributed stickers and pamphlets for them to bring home to their families.

In addition to learning about fire safety, the students also learned about the equipment that firefighters use, tried on protective gear, operated various machines and simulated driving a fire truck while sitting in the driver’s seat.  Afterwards, Mr. Goodwin also treated the students and chaperones to a pizza party.

“It was a pleasure to sponsor this event for the MPowering Kids' students,” said Roger Goodwin. “I strongly support the goals of the program, I enjoyed teaching the students about fire safety and was impressed with the attention they paid to my fire safety lecture. They were the best kids I’ve ever spoken to, by far.”
