Volunteering just a few hours of your time each week or month at MPowering Kids can be an extremely satisfying experience!

We always need volunteers, and you'll be helping both your community and our students by assisting us with the hundreds of different projects we sponsor each year.  Plus, you'll gain the satisfaction of knowing that your efforts have made a big difference in the lives of our students.

Thinking about volunteering?

See what other MPowering Kids volunteers say about working with our promising students by watching the MPowering Kids Volunteer Video!

As one of our intuitive 5th graders simply stated when asked what volunteers are “Volunteers are people who work without being paid.” He may have just hit the tip of the iceberg since the volunteers we have at MPowering Kids do much more then work with our students. They give of themselves every week to help our students with their homework, listen to problems and concerns the children might be having, or just serve as a constant in a child’s life. It is true it takes a village to raise a child and our volunteers come from our community to do just that. MPowering Kids volunteers are some of the most dedicated around not only helping our students succeed, but by donating their time they keep our overhead costs low.

Now that you know how great our volunteers are, it’s time to meet some of these exceptional people. First we must begin with Joyce. Joyce has been volunteering with MPowering Kids since the beginning. She comes twice a week and enjoys helping our 4th graders with their homework and often bring snacks and treats for the kids that they enjoy. She is a truly compassionate volunteer and much loved by the students and staff.  Although Joyce is shy about having her photo taken, you can't miss her shining blue eyes and big smile when she is working with the children!

Sage & Lonnie are a dynamic volunteer duo that volunteers at Drexel. They came to volunteer with us last year after hearing about MPowering Kids through their high school Key Club. They are back again this year and are currently seniors in high school. They volunteer with our 4th & 5th graders and their bubbly nature and willingness to help the students make them a valuable asset to MPowering Kids.

Jordan is another fabulous high school volunteer that tutors at Drexel. With predominantly female tutors, Jordan is looked up to by many of our boys. His gentle nature and ease with the children is impressive given his age. Many often confuse Jordan for a college student because of his maturity and finesse with the kids. He takes it upon himself to work one on one with students in areas they need help after they finish their homework. We are sad he will be leaving us this year as he graduates and goes on to the University of Pennsylvania, but he has proved a true inspiration to the students.

These are just a few of the marvelous volunteers who help make MPowering Kids such a success and we are grateful for their time and dedication. We need volunteers on a short-term & long-term basis. Are you interested in volunteering?

Below are some profiles of other MPowering Kids volunteers that have worked with us over the years, and the impact they have made on the success of our program.

Rosa is a high school senior and the class valedictorian.  She has been volunteering at MPowering Kids for over two years.  Despite being a dedicated student and class leader, Rosa finds the time to spend several hours each week tutoring the students at MPowering Kids.

Rosa not only serves as a tutor by helping students with their homework, but her academic accomplishments have made her a popular mentor and role model, and she has made a strong impression on many MPowering Kids students.

"I think the MPowering Kids program will be important to the success of the community, because we always hear that children will be our future, and it's true."

"There are so many distractions such as gangs and drugs that can lead kids astray today, and they usually happen right after school.  MPowering Kids gives our students a place to go instead of just wandering off in the streets."

"Recently, I went on a field trip and one of the MPowering Kids students was sitting next to me on the bus.  She was talking to me about the things that were happening in her life, and that made me feel so good that someone would open up and trust me like that."

Wendy, first began volunteering with MPowering Kids when she was a graduate student in Education at C.W. Post University.  Although she graduated last year, she continues to volunteer with MPowering Kids.  Wendy helps students with their homework, works on student/parent activities and acts as a positive role model, showing students that they have the ability to succeed in life regardless of their background.

“I really enjoy working with MPowering Kids students.  They have a tremendous enthusiasm for learning, and it’s very rewarding when they remember activities we’ve done together, because you can tell they really benefited from something you did with them.  I also enjoy working on the student/parent activities, since the parents get to meet the staff and volunteers, and they get to see firsthand how MPowering Kids works with their children."

Melissa is a senior in high school and has been volunteering at MPowering Kids for almost two years.  As a member of her school’s Key Club, she originally heard about MPowering Kids during a club meeting.

Melissa works as a tutor and mentor for fifth grade MPowering Kids students, and says, “The kids have a lot of personality, and I really enjoy being around them and hearing their opinions about everything. I love seeing my students do well in school, especially when they realize that they can accomplish whatever they set their minds to.”

Community awareness and fundraising events are also part of Melissa's volunteer activities with MPowering Kids.  Her enthusiasm about working with the students and the MPowering Kids program has encouraged others to get involved as tutors or community supporters.

Kevin began volunteering after reading an article about MPowering Kids in Newsday. Now that his own children are grown, MPowering Kids gives Kevin the opportunity to tutor young students, which he has been doing for one year.

“Being asked for my help, and then receiving genuine thanks for my efforts is very rewarding for me. To make the learning fun for the students, I try to emphasize not just the 'What' of their homework, but also the 'Why' and the 'How' as well."

In addition to tutoring students, Kevin has also helped organize various MPowering Kids events. "One of my favorite memories so far was the Christmas Party. Seeing the joy and excitement on the faces of the children really made me feel good about being able to give back to the community."
