Westbury, NY, March 8, 2004 – Dr. Constance Clark, the Superintendent of the Westbury Union Free School District, has nominated MPowering Kids™ founder Susan Marshall for the 2004 Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award. MPowering Kids is a non-profit after-school program that provides tutoring, mentoring, and cultural enrichment for students in under-served communities. “MPowering Kids provides a valuable service to the students and community of Westbury, NY,” said Dr. Clark. “The impressive results of the students participating in the program prove that after-school programs that complement the curriculum in the classroom and that provide one-on one attention can make a big difference in a student’s academic achievements.”
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award was established as one of the Empire State's highest honors for human service. The purpose of the award is to recognize New Yorkers who have made outstanding contributions in serving the community through his or her knowledge, skills and/or services. Consideration is given to individuals whose professional involvement has provided a major benefit to the public, as well as individuals who have made significant contributions to special populations such as those with disabilities, the disadvantaged or underprivileged, or those who are members of a minority group. Annual Award CeremonyAt last year’s award ceremony, New York Governor George Pataki presented the Awards to outstanding individuals who have made profound contributions to their communities and to society at large. More than 1,000 prominent community leaders and dignitaries attended the observance celebration in Albany, which was held as part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration. The event was also broadcast live via satellite throughout the state. “I am deeply touched and truly honored to be nominated for this Award,” said Susan Marshall, founder and president of MPowering Kids. “This would not be possible without the dedication of our staff, our volunteers, our supporters and the cooperation of the Westbury School District.” About MPowering KidsMPowering Kids is a non-profit charitable organization that is "promising help for promising students"™ with after-school programs focused on tutoring, mentoring, and cultural enrichment in under-served communities. After researching where a program such as MPowering Kids would have the most impact, the program was established at Drexel Avenue School with the full support of the Westbury School District. Since its inception, MPowering Kids has continually worked closely with the school’s teachers and administrators to enhance the academic promise of students.
