Computer Associates Awards $30,000 Grant To MPowering Kids To Increase Technology Access and Academic Success For Under-Served Children

Program’s Impact Marked by Improved New York State Standardized Test Scores

Islandia, NY, August 31, 2005 – Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA) today announced that it awarded a $30,000 grant to MPowering Kids, a non-profit organization that is “promising help for promising students”™ by providing tutoring, mentoring and cultural enrichment for under-privileged children. The grant will be used to equip mobile technology labs that can be easily moved between classrooms in the Westbury schools served by MPowering Kids.

“Computer Associates’ donation will help close the gap our students face in gaining regular access to technology,” said Susan Marshall, founder and president, MPowering Kids. “Increased computer use and training will help our students continue the impressive gains they are making in their grades and standardized test scores.”

Impressive Academic Gains

Of the children enrolled in its program, MPowering Kids reports that:

  • After one year, 92% improved their reading grades and 83% improved their writing grades;

  • They outperformed their peers on the New York State Standard English Language Arts Test by 14% for the fourth grade, by 53% for the fifth grade and by 73% for the sixth grade;

  • 90% reported that they feel more sure of themselves and are better leaders;

  • 80% report they are better prepared for class and have more options for the future; and

  • 86% report that they are more able to resist drugs.

Improved Student Access To Technology

“At CA, we believe in building strong communities where all children have access to educational opportunities that will help them reach their maximum potential,” said Anne Marie Agnelli, director of community and public affairs, CA. “We are keenly aware that access to technology is critical to the success of today’s young people. We are proud to support MPowering Kids in its mission to ensure academic success for under-served children.”

CA’s donation will equip two mobile technology labs composed of laptop computers, wireless internet connections, educational software, printers, digital cameras and a multimedia projector. The labs will be located in Drexel Avenue Elementary School and Westbury Middle School.

To fully leverage the capabilities of the technology labs, the MPowering Kids staff has developed a comprehensive technology curriculum that is designed to supplement each student’s schoolwork. The goal of the curriculum is to integrate technology into learning, so that the students improve their skills in the critical areas of math, science and reading, in order to prepare themselves academically for college and professional careers.
