MPowering Kids Students Continue Their Impressive Academic Gains

Year-Over-Year Improvements In Grades And Test Scores Continue

 

Westbury, NY, September 19, 2005 — Students in the MPowering Kids program, a non-profit academic after-school program that provides tutoring, mentoring, and cultural enrichment for students in under-served communities, continued to post impressive gains in their grades and on standardized tests during the 2005 academic year.

 

In addition, a comprehensive survey of MPowering Kids students shows that students are making important advances in both their behavior and attitude due to their participation in the program.

 

2005 School Year - Test Score Improvements

Continuing the trend from 2004, MPowering Kids students continue to outperform their peers by larger and larger amounts, reinforcing the effectiveness of a consistent nine year program.

2005 School Year - Grade Improvements

Also continuing the trend from the 2004 school year, first year students in the MPowering Kids program achieved significant gains in their grades, as show below:

*Improvements in the areas of Reading & Writing are especially crucial for MPowering Kids students, since so many come from homes where English is not the primary language.

 

 

Qualitative Survey Results

In addition to using grades and test scores as performance metrics, all students who participate in the MPowering Kids program are also given a detailed qualitative survey that is designed to measure behaviors and attitudes. 

 

In addition to their academic gains, MPowering Kids students say that because of their participation in the program*:

  • More than 90% feel more sure of themselves, and feel they can become a better leader.

  • More than 85% are getting better grades and test scores, and feel that there are more people that will help them.

  • More than 80%:

    • Are better prepared for class

    • Try and help others

    • Feel that they have more options for the future

  • 86% feel more able to resist drugs.

  • 97% rated the program as Excellent or Good.

* Students that "Strongly Agreed" or "Agreed" with the statement.

MPowering Kids is a non-profit charitable organization that provides after-school tutoring, mentoring, cultural enrichment and community service programs for motivated students in under-served communities.
