Westbury, NY, December 15, 2006 — Holiday cheer bellowed through the halls of MPowering Kids on Friday as our annual Holiday party was in full swing. All of the MPowering Kids and their families were invited, as well as volunteers, staff and board members. Many donated their time to help including volunteers from New York Institute of Technology’s sororities and fraternities. They arrived in full force to help with set-up and to hand out gifts and even “guarded” the presents from the eager students before Santa arrived. Generous donations by Westbury Manor & Olive Garden made for a delicious meal of spaghetti, lasagna and chicken francese ending with sweet treats of donuts & cookies donated by Dunkin Donuts & Panera Bread. In addition to the delicious food, the staff of Olive Garden in Westbury & students at NYCOM medical school in Old Westbury donated toys for each MPowering Kids student from wishes each child had requested. Aside from the usual dolls & games kids ask for, simpler pleasures were requested. One child asked for a comfortable pillow to sleep on. Another asked for a bouncy ball that bounces to the moon. Their wishes came true as Santa came to deliver the toys to the excited children. The smile and joy on the faces of the children was priceless. Siblings of the students were also treated to gifts so everyone walked away with a smile on their face. The gifts did not end there however as each family at the party was presented with a $50 gift card compliments of board member Roger Goodwin. This generous gift is sure to go a long way to make this holiday season even more special for the MPowering Kids families. During this time of thanks, we took time to acknowledge the outstanding volunteers who give of their time to tutor our students. Each volunteer was called up and presented a picture of the students they tutor in a special frame the children made for the volunteers. The volunteers relished this precious gift. Throughout the evening the DJ played holiday tunes and many sang along creating a festive environment. The crowd danced to classics such as the Electric Slide and Macarena and also did a little salsa and meringue. It was quite a sight to see our volunteers and students dancing and laughing the night away. The party concluded with full bellies and happy faces. What better way to end a party?
