MPowering Kids Open their Hearts to Residents of Bristal Assisted Living

Westbury, NY, February 14, 2007 — The students of MPowering Kids celebrated Valentine’s Day with residents of the Bristal Assisted Living in Westbury on February 9th. This annual visit to the Bristal has proved a rewarding experience time and time again. Students sat with residents and asked them questions about their lives to discover the similarities they share as well as their differences through the use of a Venn Diagram. This simple exercise proved a winning situation for both child and senior.

The students sat cautiously at first, but soon warmed up and asked many questions. MPowering Kids asked questions about the resident’s childhood and were amazed to find out that the cost of a movie ticket was just 15 cents. The residents were equally shocked to fiopricetoday were ten dollars! The students visited for over an hour sharing many facts about their own lives. One 4th grade boy was intrigued as the gentleman he was talking with spoke of how trolleys ran all over New York City years ago. This visit taught the children not only about history, but also the importance of giving back to the community.

“This visit is a highlight each year,” said Susan Marshall, Founder of MPowering Kids. “The students get so much out of their interaction with the residents and the pure enjoyment everyone feels is palpable. We look forward to many more visits.”

Cake and cookies brought by the students added to the festive atmosphere. Students also gave the residents special handmade Valentine’s cards. This brought a smile to young and old alike as the Valentine’s were exchanged.

The students expressed how good they felt after visiting with the Bristal residents. Community service is a large component of the MPowering Kids program. Students in the program have also raised money for local charities, held a food drive at Thanksgiving and are currently pen plans with a deployed soldier.
