MPowering Kids
Shares the Love
with Residents of the Bristal |
Westbury, NY,
February 15, 2008 — The students of MPowering Kids
marveled at the hearts dangling from the ceiling
that decorated the Bristal. They clutched the
valentines they had made especially for the
residents as they entered. MPowering Kids was
continuing a long-standing tradition of throwing an
annual Valentine’s Day party for the Bristal
residents.
Students sat next to residents and asked them a
variety of questions about their lives. They
documented their answers in a Venn Diagram that
depicted their similarities and differences.
MPowering Kids asked such questions as who was
president when they were young, did they have a TV
and who was their favorite author.
One particular resident shared with an MPowering
Kids’ 5th grader the significance of Irish sweaters.
He explained that he was from Ireland and that the
pattern on each sweater represented a specific
family. People knew which family someone was from
depending on the pattern of the sweater. The 5th
grader sat in awe as the resident came back from his
room to show her his own Irish sweater.
“This annual event brings smiles to our kids as well
as the residents of the Bristal,” said Susan
Marshall, founder of MPowering Kids. “The students
learn so much from the wonderful stories the
residents of the Bristal share. We look forward to
coming back each year.”
MPowering Kids brought a delicious Valentine’s Day
cake as well as cookies to share with the residents.
The day ended on a happy note as the students
presented each resident with a Valentine they had
made. A perfect ending to a perfect day.
Community service and outreach is a large component
of the MPowering Kids program. Students in the
program have raised money for local charities, held
a food drive at Thanksgiving and are currently
working on a recycling plan to help the environment.
MPowering Kids is a non-profit charitable
organization that provides after-school tutoring,
mentoring, and cultural enrichment and community
service programs for motivated students in
under-served communities. The MPowering Kids staff
and volunteers work closely with students from
fourth grade through their high school graduation,
offering nine years of programs and opportunities to
acquire the skills, habits and attitudes necessary
to succeed in college and in life.
The MPowering Kids program is made possible through the
generous support of individual and corporate sponsors.
