MPowering Kids High School Senior Named 1st in Her Graduating Class!

Nov. 1, 2010 – In 4th Grade, Keyry was in the first group of students chosen for the MPowering Kids program. She has been in the program every year since, and become an outstanding example of the benefits of the attention of consistant concerned adults, after-school tutoring and mentoring. In addition, the values of responsibility, respect and philanthropy are reflected in the way Keyry interacts with her community.

We are so proud to know that she is the #1 highest academic acheiver in her class of 251 high school students this year!

And, guess what? All of the MPowering Kids 12th graders are in the top 20 of the class!

MPowering Kids has seen consistent and significant academic gains for each student:

  • Graduating to accelerated or gifted classes – Before joining the MPowering Kids program, trend analysis shows that an average of 15% of these students were in accelerated classes.  After completing three years in the MPowering Kids program, 50% of MPowering Kids students have been elevated from regular classes to accelerated classes where they are working on more challenging academic materials alongside gifted students.  After completing five years in the program, over 80% of the students have been elevated from regular classes to accelerated classes.
  •

  • Achieving Honor Roll Status – Through an initiative to improve each individual student’s academic progress through increased communication with each teacher, the MPowering Kids program again had a profound impact.  By the end of the last school year, over 64% of the MPowering Kids’ students were listed on the Honor Roll!

MPowering Kids Students Outperform Their Peers on Standardized Tests

    MPowering Kids Standardized Test Results

MPowering Kids maintains the highest standards of accountability and performance in its after-school program. We use standardized test scores and report card grades as the basis for our quantitative analysis. In addition, statistics are gathered each year documenting attendance and demographic information such as race, gender, and income levels of the participants. Staff and volunteers also provide information to assess the effectiveness of the program and areas of improvement.

While the staff measures the success of the program through numbers and statistics, it places an equal importance on the quality of the students’ experience. A third-party qualitative and quantitative study, developed by professors of education at a local University, tracks the performance of MPowering Kids students over the nine years that they participate in the program, as compared to a control group.

The latest Westbury School District survey results show that:

    • 100% of the Drexel Avenue Elementary School teachers surveyed gave the program a rating of 4 or higher on a 5 point scale.
    • 81% of the Westbury Middle School and Westbury High School teachers surveyed said that their MPowering Kids’ students came to class always or almost always prepared.
    • 81% of the Westbury Middle School teachers gave the program a cumulative rating of 4 or 5.
